Acupuncture Meridians: A Map to Health

from:

Body & Self

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, as well as most other Asian
medicine practices, the acupuncture meridians are important
lines that follow the flow of energy through the body - and as
such they can be keys for helping the body to maintain its
health. For the Eastern traditionalist, body health is closely
tied to spiritual health - one must maintain a balance of
energies within the self in order to reach one's potential.

The physical body is also a mirror of the inner self, and pain
and illness are thought to be caused by an imbalance in the flow
of qi, or "vital energy," through the self.

Allowing the qi to fall out of balance, either through
deficiencies and surpluses or by losing a balance between the
yin and the yang, results in pain or illness in the body. The
goal of acupuncture is to restore this balance so the body can
heal itself and return to normal health.

Turning the Tables with the Meridians

This connection between body and energy also works in reverse.
This is what allows the practitioner to manipulate the
acupuncture meridians in order to return the flow of qi to
normal. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the systems of the body
are each related to one of the acupuncture meridians. There are
twelve primary meridians, and these twelve meridians are split
between the yin channel and the yang channel.

Furthermore, each of the channels is shared evenly between the
hand and the foot. This arrangement of the primary acupuncture
meridians breaks down thusly:

The yin channel for the hand is made up of the meridians for the
Lung, the Pericardium, and the Heart. These begin at the chest
and follow the anterior of the inner arm until they reach the
hand. The yang channel for the hand is made up of those
meridians for the Large Intestine, the San Jiao, and the Small
Intestine, which begin at the hand and follow the outer
posterior surface of the arm until they reach the head.

The yin channel for the foot is made up of the meridians for the
Spleen, the Liver, and the Kidney. These begin at the foot and
follow the inner posterior surface of the leg until they reach
the chest or flank, while the yang channel of the foot is made
up of the meridians for the Stomach, the Gallbladder, and the
Bladder, which begin on the face, near the eye, and follow the
anterior and lateral surface of the body and leg until they
reach the foot.

In addition, there are eight extra, or secondary meridians.
However, only two of these secondary acupuncture meridians are
accessed directly by an acupuncturist - the remaining six are
manipulated through points that exist along the primary
meridians. The two that stand on their own are located on the
anterior of the midline of the head and trunk.

Correcting the Flow

Through their understanding of the way qi moves through these
meridians in the body, an acupuncture practitioner can stimulate
points along these acupuncture meridians to balance yin and yang
flow and to eliminate blockages normalize the overall movement
of qi through the body.
